Unloading Haematite Ore

Back   Next

The Moldavia was a regular visitor to Workington

Unloading Hematite iron ore from the "Moldavia" at the Prince of Wales Dock. Both steel and wooden bodied wagons were in use on the internal rail system which linked the dock to the ironworks. They were only equipped with rudimentary brake gear.

When the Dockers were not inclined to go in to the ship's hold with shovels to recover the ore left by the grabs, the work was offered to labourers from the mill, who could boost their earnings with overtime.

Since Iron and Steelmaking ceased in the early 1980s, ore is no longer imported but the dock still sees the export of rails and steel sleepers.
